Patients visiting the Kangba Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound in the Siiru Electoral Area in the Wa West District, can now heave a sigh of relief after Ashfar Foundation invested about Gh¢150,000.00 into the facility.

The investment by Ashfar Foundation, a subsidiary of Ashfar Limited, included the installation of about 2kwt solar system with backup batteries, two three-crank lying-in hospital beds, a delivery bed, and a solar freezer, and renovation of the delivery room.

This was after a report by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) exposed the difficulties the health personnel go through to deliver healthcare services at the facility at night owing to the lack of electricity.

The GNA reported that health personnel at the facility relied on flashlights to work at night to deliver babies.

The intervention, the first of its kind in the country by the Ashfar Foundation since the inception of the company in the country about five years ago, was in collaboration with the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.

Speaking to the GNA at the community after commissioning the facility, Madam Faridah Afadameh, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ashfar Limited, a renewable energy company, noted that the initiative was borne out of the desire of the company to support rural communities with access to electricity.

“So, the article was not a rural electrification article, but it was touching on the health of the people, especially women.

“So, we decided to probe more to find out the extent of the evidence that GNA mentioned in the article,” she explained.

She said their inquiries revealed the urgent need for delivery and lying-in beds as pregnant women visiting the facility were delivered on the floor and sent home immediately after the delivery hence the need to include the delivery and lying-in beds.

She said the freezer was also to help store essential medications that needed to be refrigerated, including the COVID-19 vaccines and anti-snake-serum.

Madam Afadameh explained that the Foundation would continue to support the facility including maintenance services and provision of critical medications such as snake anti-snake-serum alongside the government interventions.

She stressed that the intervention was neither politically nor economically motivated but to impact the lives of the about 3,000 people in six communities in the area who were likely to access healthcare services at the facility.

The residents were elated and thanked the company for heeding their plea and saving their lives and the lives of unborn generations.

They said their ordeal in accessing healthcare services at the facility, particularly at night, would cease.

Madam Paulina Cudjoe, the In-Charge of the facility, could not hide her excitement over the intervention and said it would relieve their challenges.

She said the difficulties they, hitherto, went through in accessing essential medications at the facility would become a thing of the past with the availability of the freezer and the support of the foundation.

Madam Cecilia Kakariba, the Wa West District Director of Health Services, urged the community members to put the facility to effective use to derive the maximum benefit for the benefit of future generations.

She admonished the people not to see the intervention as an end to their referrals saying, “This structure can go a long way to prevent referrals that a midwife can handle here.

“But it is not everything they can do, definitely they will refer, so let’s not say that there is a midwife here and still they refer pregnant women”, she added

Superintendent (rtd) Peter Lanchene Toobu, the MP, commended Ashfar Limited for the collaboration to put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable people at Kangba and surrounding community.

He said the equipment the Foundation supplied had elevated the facility to be the best CHPS compound in the district.
